City of Cleveland Establishes “Cleveland Celebrates America 250” Committee
Cleveland, Georgia — At its January meeting, the Mayor and City Council of Cleveland, Georgia, unanimously approved the creation of the Cleveland Celebrates America 250 Committee. The committee was established by proclamation to lead the City’s participation in the nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.
“This once-in-a-generation celebration provides an opportunity for our community to reflect on America’s history, honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, and inspire civic pride, unity, and engagement for future generations,” said Mayor Josh Turner.
The Cleveland Celebrates America 250 Committee is chaired by First Lady of Cleveland, Lacy Turner, with Councilmember Nan Bowen, Councilmember Annie Sutton, Mrs. Ansley McClure, and Mrs. Haley McDonald serving as Co-Chairs.
The committee is supported by:
Kevin Harris, City Manager – Administrative Director and City point of contact
Lisa Ritchie, City Clerk – Secretary and official record keeper
John Solmon, Finance Director – Treasurer
Together, this leadership team brings experience in public service, education, public safety, faith leadership, civic engagement, and community development.
The committee was intentionally designed to be broad, inclusive, and representative of the Cleveland and White County community. Membership includes city and county officials, public safety leaders, educators, historians, business and civic organization leaders, university representatives, faith leaders from every church within the city limits, and community members. This diverse structure ensures the America 250 celebration reflects many voices and perspectives while honoring our shared history and community values.
To support effective planning and meaningful programming, the following subcommittees have been established:
Fireworks Show Committee – Chair: Interim Fire Chief Bo Medlock
Entertainment Committee – Chair: Alyssa Tyree
Public Safety Committee – Chair: Police Chief Jeff Shoemaker
Public Relations and Communications Committee – Chair: City Manager Kevin Harris
Sponsorships Committee – Chair: Finance Director John Solmon
Education and History Committee – Co-Chairs: Jonathan Stribling and Garrison Baker
“Run for Freedom” 5K Committee – Chair: Carlos Santiago

Additional subcommittees may be formed as needed to support new ideas, events, and community-led initiatives.
Planned activities include a Cleveland Celebrates America 250 Fireworks Celebration, a “Run for Freedom” 5K Race, a student and community art contest, the America Prays Initiative, hosting the Our American Story Trailer Tour, and other educational, historical, and cultural events designed to engage residents and visitors.
The City of Cleveland warmly welcomes community involvement. Residents, students, businesses, churches, civic groups, and organizations are encouraged to participate by volunteering, sponsoring events, serving on subcommittees, or contributing ideas and resources. America 250 is not just a celebration of the past: it is an opportunity to come together as a community to reflect, learn, serve, and envision our shared future.
More information on meetings, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming events will be shared as planning continues on the City’s website and social media channels.
